What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is inflammation of the attachments of the muscles to the bones. It is a common source of joint pain.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of tendonitis can be:

  • Pain at joint areas (elbow, shoulder, or knee)
  • Swelling

Causes and Risks

Tendonitis is most often due to chronic overuse. In more rare cases certain medications can cause tendonitis or tendon rupture.

Treatment and Prevention

Limiting overuse and maintaining strength in the muscles surrounding the joints can be an effective way in preventing tendonitis.

Treatment may include:

  • Rest
  • NSAIDS
  • Bracing
  • Exercise
  • Steroid injections
