Joint Pain Q & A

What is joint pain?

Joint pain includes any discomfort, inflammation, or tenderness in a joint. The pain may be mild or severe and limit joint use.

Joint pain may affect any joint in your body. However, the knees, hips, shoulders, hands, and wrists are a common source of joint pain.

What causes joint pain?

Any injury or disease that affects one or more of the components that make up your joint may cause joint pain. Common causes of joint pain include:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Dislocation
  • Fracture
  • Ligament tear
  • Tendon tear
  • Fibromyalgia

However, most joint pain develops from a type of arthritis. Arthritis is a general term that describes joint pain and inflammation.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis that causes joint pain. It’s a degenerative condition that develops from the wearing away of the cartilage that separates the bones that make up the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout are also types of arthritis that cause joint pain.

What happens during a joint pain evaluation?

When you visit Modern Pain & Spine for a joint pain evaluation, you can expect a patient-centered exam. Though your concern may be getting relief from joint pain, the interventional pain management specialists focus on you, not your pain.

They review your symptoms and medical history and ask how your joint pain interferes with your daily life. They perform a physical exam, paying close attention to the structure, function, strength, and mobility of the joint causing your discomfort.

To confirm or rule out a diagnosis to explain your pain, your provider requests digital X-rays, which they perform on-site. They can refer you for additional imaging or tests if needed.

How is joint pain treated?

Modern Pain & Spine customizes treatment for joint pain based on the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms. Initially, your provider may recommend conservative treatments such as on-site physical therapy, heat and ice, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

However, Modern Pain & Spine specializes in interventional pain management treatments for joint pain, including:

Corticosteroid injections

Corticosteroid injections contain a steroid and anesthetic that reduces joint pain and inflammation.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

PRP therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that helps speed up your body’s natural healing process by injecting extra platelets directly into your diseased or damaged joint.

Hyaluronic acid gel

For chronic knee pain, Modern Pain & Spine offers hyaluronic acid gel injections to lubricate and cushion the joint.
