David Calkins, MD

Dr. David Calkins is a native New Mexican. He began his studies at the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point where he received a B.S. in engineering. He served as an Army Ranger in the 1st Cavalry Division, 1/77th Artillery Battalion. He then attended US Army Aviation School and began flying helicopters. He had always wanted to pursue a career in medicine and was accepted to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school he entered the Navy as a Flight Surgeon. While in the Navy, he served with Fleet Hospital five in Haiti, Bosnia, and Iraq.

Dr. Calkins began his specialty medical training in anesthesia and pain management at the University of California San Francisco. He underwent Fellowship training in interventional pain management under the direction of one of the fathers of pain medicine Dr. Way Yin. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Pain Management in 2004. He studied with the founding members of the International Spinal Injection Society (SIS). He pioneered the use of many different novel technologies for pain management including the use of radiofrequency ablation. He has since worked to further the science of pain management, including research into the treatment of pain of the lower back, especially the sacroiliac joint. He has returned to his home in New Mexico where his goal is to improve the lives of his patients by decreasing pain and returning them to an active lifestyle. He is married and has two wonderful children.
